Rock Recruitment Specialists organise the annual Rock Star Awards celebrating Dorset’s outstanding employees, students and entrepreneurs aged 16-26 and the local companies that develop them into the stars of the future. Eight winners were announced at a ceremony on 5th June at The O2 Academy Bournemouth in front of nearly 400 local business representatives.
This year, the Awards supported local charity Coda Fiddle Orchestra, a participatory community project in Boscombe, working with children and young people from across Bournemouth to engage them in music and provide opportunities that they would not normally have access to. The Orchestra played two sets at the awards ceremony, offering an exciting experience for the students to perform on a large stage.
In addition to performing at the event, Rock wanted to contribute a small percentage of ticket sales to support the orchestra. This has resulted in a £750 donation to the charity and will take the form of two Rock Star Award scholarships. The pupils who have been awarded the scholarships are Lucinda Wood and Khadeza Gabroun who are both aged 11.
Angela Fletcher, Rock Recruitment’s MD, created the Rock Star Awards, which began in 2013. She recently presented a cheque to Maurice Patterson and Jack Maguire from Coda Fiddle and said “What a fantastic evening we enjoyed in June.
I would like to thank the Coda Fiddle Orchestra for their wonderful contribution to the event and I am delighted that the Rock Star Awards is able to positively support Lucinda and Khadeza in the coming year. We wish them huge success and look forward to seeing them perform.”
Jack Maguire conducted the orchestra and commented “Performing at the O2 Academy to such a large crowd was an excellent experience for our young musicians and has already led to invitations to perform at other events. For the two students that have been awarded scholarships, this will enable them to receive tuition towards music exams which would not be possible without the support of Coda Fiddle and Rock.”
The Rock Star Awards aims to provide opportunities for young people, extending beyond recognition for the finalists and winners. Rock Recruitment utilise the event to give as many young people the opportunity to perform and work on the awards event, providing experience for various CV’s. It is vital to have something practical and interesting to talk about in interviews, especially for those applying for a first job. The Rock Star Awards provided a chance to shine for singers, orchestras, event organisers and media producers and aims to extend this in 2015 to include catering, presenting and stage production.
